THE TERROIR

Our secret: the link between soil, climate and man.

THE CLIMATE

The nearby mountains offer marked temperature variance between day and night, which sets the flavors and enhances the aromatic characteristics of our wines.

Located in the northernmost part of Tuscany, Lunigiana is surrounded by the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, the Apuan Alps and the Tyrrhenian Sea. This is rugged and wild land, with sunny valleys and hills on which ancient villages of rare beauty rest. One of these is certainly Monte dei Bianchi, dominating the entire Valle del Lucido from an altitude of 400m.

The climate is characterized by two well-defined periods: one in autumn-spring during which rainfall is abundant and one in summer with prolonged intervals of absence of rainfall, with consequent and appropriate water tension in the vineyards.

THE VINEYARDS

Every day our vineyards, located on the slopes of the Apuan Alps, receive the warm southwesterly winds that mitigate the climate of these hills.

THE TERRAIN

Galestro is abundant and when it crumbles, it releases numerous minerals that are essential for quality viticulture.

The subsoil represents our unique and unrepeatable natural heritage. One must know it on a deep and profound level to fully grasp its potential.

The formation of these hills comes from the bottoms of the ancient oceans, where magmatic rocks were covered by marine deposits, abyssal clays and marly limestones over the millennia.
The rise of the mountain ranges brought these lands to the surface and gave rise to the current geological composition of the land where the Alberese and Galestro are present in great abundance.

Over the millennia, infiltrations of water have broken up these rocks, making them living matter and releasing the mineral salts, so distinctive of this territory, that represent our identity.

In seeking depth, our vines find these hidden minerals that nourish the plant and tame its fruits – therefore taming also the wine, where the echo of its origin resounds in an illuminating testimony.

THE COMPOSITION OF THE SOIL

The soil is clayey, calcareous, rocky and poor in organic matter. It has good drainage and good water retention capacity.

The loose texture of the soil favors rooting in the subsoil in search of nourishment, water and above all those mineral elements that strongly characterize these strips of land.

In our wines we find freshness, elegance, structure and noble tannins. We find a unique quality, closely linked with its land of origin, which tells and continues its story.
